If your credit card comes back with a “No Match” message or it is “Declined”,
your banking Institution may hold your funds for three or more days.

    
• Step 1: Regulations and Eligibility Requirements - Some customers will not be eligible to renew online, so please read carefully. 

Is it time for my renewal? Customers can renew online during their renewal month.

Can I renew online if my tag has expired?  Yes.  We are pleased to now offer online renewal service if your tag has expired.

What is the penalty for late renewal of a tag?  The penalty for failure to renew a registration during your current renewal month is $15 plus 12% annualized interest to the date of payment.

What types of registrations can be renewed online? Passenger cars and trucks with a gross vehicle weight of less than 8,000 pounds, as well as motorcycles can be renewed online. Boat licenses can also be renewed online.

Are there residency requirements? Vehicle owner must be a resident of Mobile County.

Will I be charged extra fees for online services?  Online customers will be charged a 2.3% ($1.50 minimum) fee for each tag,  decal or boat decal renewed, as well as $1.00 mail fee for decals. A mail fee of $2.50 will apply for customers receiving a new metal plate. 
 

What if I have moved and my address is not correct on my renewal notice? If your renewal notice or current registration has an incorrect address, you may complete a change of address form online and forward it to this office prior to completion of your online renewal, or you may contact the office at (251) 574-8551 for assistance.  

What if my transaction requires an affidavit? Any transaction requiring an affidavit will have to be issued through our Tag Mail Department or in person at one of our locations.  Certain holds on tag records 
indicating non-compliance with laws, policies or regulations may require you to renew in person.

Can I change my current license plate to a personalized tag or change to a specialty tag?   No. To make a change from a regular tag to a specialized tag, including ordering a personalized tag, you must go to one of the License Commissioner's offices.
Can I renew the last business day of the month? Tags can be renewed online up until 5:00 p.m. the last business day of the month.  If the last day of your current renewal month falls on the weekend or a holiday, you may renew the next business day without a penalty.

Can I use a credit card that is not in my name?  No. The name on the credit card and billing address must match name and address in our computer system.

Can I use a credit card to renew a manufactured home decal if the registration is not in my name? Yes. If you are a tenant occupying the mobile home, you may renew the registration using your credit card.


• Step 2: Have the following items ready:

The courtesy (tag, boat or manufactured home) renewal notice you received in the mail. For vehicle registrations, you will be required to enter the Tag Number, Make, Model, Year, and first four numbers and/or letters of the Vehicle Identification Number. For boats, you will need the Make, Model Year, AL number and Social Security Number.

Credit Card Information:    
The Mobile County License Commissioner’s office accepts Visa and MasterCard. Your credit card statement mailing address must match the address on your renewal notice. 

Alabama driver’s license, Alabama non-driver ID, or Commercial FEIN Number. One of these three items will be required when renewing your tag registration.

Mobile County License Commission Refund Policy:
Property tax on vehicles is collected in advance when customers renew their tags, therefore customers can receive a Receipt for Credit or Credit Voucher for prepaid taxes when they sell or trade a vehicle before the next renewal date. Proper documentation is required for any Receipt for Credit or Credit Voucher.

Mobile County License Commission Driver’s Privacy Protection Act:
The Federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act of 1994 went into effect September 1997. This law was enacted to protect the interest of individuals in their personal privacy by prohibiting the disclosure and use of personal information contained in their motor vehicle registration and title records, except as authorized by such individuals or by law. Personal information is defined as “information that identifies a person, including an individual’s social security number, name, and address.” 
The Mobile County License Commission’s number one concern is the security and privacy of your transactions. All requirements have been made to address your privacy concerns and provide secure service to you the taxpayer.

Mobile County License Commission Delivery Policy:
Registrations will be processed the same day that the credit card is charged. The office will mail the registration receipt within one to two business days.
