Who we are and What we do

Carol R. Norris is the License Commissioner for Mobile County.  The office of the
License Commissioner is responsible for the collection and distribution of various types of licenses, sales and use tax.  Among the many licenses issued are motor vehicle tag and title registrations, manufactured home decals, boat registrations, handicap decals, business licenses and renewal of driver licenses.

The License Commissioner's office employs approximately 100 employees to carry out its duties, and it operates four locations throughout the County of Mobile.  Sites are:  Michael Square, Theodore Oaks, Eight Mile, Downtown, and a part-time operation in Citronelle.

How to apply for a job

Most of our job openings are for tag and title clerks. These employees wait on the
public registering and renewing license plates. Entry level positions are either Fiscal Clerk I or Office Assistant I with a starting salary of $24,098.29 annually, plus a $5.00 subsistence pay for working an eight hour day.

All applications must apply through the Mobile County Personnel Board (www.personnelboard.org) located at 1809 Government Street.

The Personnel Board's hours of operation are as follows: Monday through Friday - 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

You must take your driver license and social security card with you to the Personnel Board.

Inform front desk personnel that you want to complete an application for the position of Fiscal Clerk I. After filling out the application, the Personnel Board will notify you by mail as to when to return to take a written examination. After passing the written test, you will be notified to return for an interview. When the Personnel Board completes the testing and interviewing process, all candidates are ranked. It is at that time that the Personnel Board will provide the License Commissioner's office with a list of candidates from which we can then interview and hire.

The License Commission has another job announcement open for Office Assistant I. Both a written and typing test are required for this classification. Minimum typing requirement: 35 wpm.
